My New Found Hobby For 2017

Since I found out that I was coeliac back in 2009 and had to live with a gluten free diet for the rest of my life, I have seen the variety of gluten free foods soar over the years. Supermarkets now have about half an isle dedicated to free from foods whereas back then it was a couple of shelves and it was pretty much just loafs of bread and bags of pasta. Even restaurants are now providing gluten free options and there’s nothing that makes me happier than being able to have a choice of what to eat rather than having to play it safe with a salad.

However, one thing I have noticed that there is still a slight lack of in the free from world are the likes of bakeries. Each year for the past 8 years, my Nan has had to make myself and sister our birthday cakes because you simply can’t go out and buy one from the supermarket.

This is where my new found hobby of cake decorating comes onto the scene. I’ve always loved baking but just never have enough time to do it more often, plus gluten free flour is like well expensive. But I thought, why not make free from cakes for the demographic who can’t buy these fancy cakes that everyone gets for their big birthdays. Or wedding cakes for that matter! I haven’t seen anyone offer to make free from wedding cakes.

I’m that set on making this work that I’m even looking into doing a college course in cake decorating to learn the tricks of the trade. Since watching The Apprentice last year and seeing Alana win it with her cake company I think that has given me the push that I really needed to put this into practice.

They always say that you should dream big and set your sights high, so I’m actually hoping that maybe after a couple of years of doing this, providing it takes off and is worth the investment, opening up my own little bakery/coffee shop that is dedicated to free from baked goods.

It all seems a little far-fetched at the minute and is literally just an idea on a piece of paper, but who says I couldn’t achieve it? I fully intend to do this the correct way and do market research and ev to see if this is something people would actually want. Who knows, I could be the free from Mary Berry! (I wish).

But if you’re gluten free, lactose free or have any allergies like nuts, or you know someone who does, please let me know your thoughts on this. I don’t want to be hung up on a hopeless dream.
